STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA NOVAYA ROSSIYA was founded in 1990. Yury Bashmet assumed direction of the orchestra in 2002, opening a new chapter in its history. Maestro Bashmet has brought to the orchestra his own inimitable manner of interpretation, in which each of its concerts evokes the feeling that the music is being created anew before the very eyes and ears of the audience

Appearing with the orchestra have been such eminent musicians as Valery Gergiev, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Alexander Lazarev, David Stern Emil Tabakov, Johannes Wildner, Barry Douglas, Peter Donohoe, Denis Matsuev, Boris Berezovsky, Viktor Tretiakov, Viviane Hagner, Sergey Krylov, Uto Ughi, Viktoria Mullova, Natalia Gutman, Placido Domingo, Deborah Voigt, Monserrat Caballe, Laura Claycomb, Anna Netrebko, Elina Garanca, Patrizia Ciofi, Rolando Villazon.

Novaya Rossia is a frequent guest at festivals in Russia and abroad, including the Moscow Easter Festival, the Alfred Schnittke Festival in Moscow, the Besancon Festival in France, “The Elbe Isola Musicale d’Europa” in Italy, the Athens Festival in Greece and the Festival of Russian Art in Essen, Germany.

The orchestra regularly plays a subscription series under the auspices of the Moscow Philharmonic association, with varied programs aimed at both adult and younger listeners. It has often toured abroad, notably to Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Greece, Bulgaria, India and Turkey. It also tours at home.

Yury Bashmet occupies a special place among musicians of the present day, turning the viola, for the very first time ever, into a recognized solo instrument.
Composers worldwide have grasped on to this phenomenon and, specially for Bashmet, have created more than fifty works for viola.

Bashmet’s appearances have a hypnotizing effect on listeners. As one British critic has noted, his music making seems “like rain, falling drop by drop, infiltrating the heart and animating it.”

For many years, the principal partner of Novaya Rossiya has been one of Russia’s largest companies, Basic Element, whose very name expresses its importance to the Russian economy, its industry and its culture. Continuing in the grand tradition of Russian patronage, Basic Element provides financial support to a huge number of projects in many spheres of activity, enriching the lives of hundreds of thousands of Russians.
