Performances and concerts took place on seven stages: in the historical building of the Mariinsky Theater, in the Concert Hall, in Mariinsky-2 and in its four chamber halls;

Mariinsky – for children project: in the 2018/19 season, more than 100,000 young spectators attended various performances and cultural and educational programs of the theater;

Tours of the Mariinsky Theater

In the 2018/19 season, the Mariinsky Theater team (opera, ballet, choir, symphony orchestra) toured 19 countries: more than 50 foreign and 40 Russian cities.
Among the most ambitious tours: the long tour of Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra, which covered 10 cities of the USA and Mexico, performances in the countries of the Asia-Pacific region: in the largest cities of China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan, as well as in Vladivostok, a tour in the cities of Spain. Significant musical projects were the Tchaikovsky Festival on the stage of the Munich Gasteig Philharmonic, the cycle of all the symphonies of Pyotr Tchaikovsky, sounded at the Vienna Concerthouse, and the musical offering of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov as part of the Moscow Easter Festival.

Valery Gergiev also performed with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the La Scala Theater Orchestra, the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebau Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera Symphony Orchestra, the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra Orchestra Orchestra Orchestra Orchestra Orchestra In 2018, the post of musical director of this group. In the 2018/19 season, Valery Gergiev performed for the first time at the Bayreuth Festival – under his direction, a series of screenings of the premiere of the opera “Tannhauser” by Richard Wagner was held, and starting from August 15 he will conduct one of the premier of the Salzburg Festival – Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Simon Boccanegra”. The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, which Valery Gergiev leads for the fourth consecutive season, gave concerts under his direction in the cities of Germany, France, the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea, China, and Japan. As part of this cooperation, the 360th degree festival of Valery Gergiev was held in Munich for the fourth time, the events of which this year coincided with the 125th anniversary of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.

Season premieres

The first premiere of the season was Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor directed by Andrea De Rosa on the stage of Mariinsky 2;

Within the framework of the festival, for the 175th birthday of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, the Mariinsky Theater presented premieres of three productions at once: the one-act operas Mozart and Salieri and Kashchei the Immortal directed by Vyacheslav Starodubtsev (Concert Hall) and the one-act prologue Boyar Vera Sheloga in Mariinsky-2 (director – Yuri Laptev), which is performed one night with the opera Pskovityanka, as the composer intended;

The premiere of Giacomo Puccini’s opera Girl from the West, directed by Arno Bernard on the stage of Mariinsky 2, opened the XXVII Stars of the White Nights Music Festival;

Another premiere of the Stars of the White Nights festival was the opera Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner staged by Vyacheslav Starodubtsev on the stage of the Concert Hall;

The premiere of “Push Comes to Shove” ballet by the legendary American choreographer, winner of the Emmy, Tony and US National Medal in the Arts – Twyla Tharp – opened the 18th Mariinsky International Ballet Festival;

The premiere of the ballet “Playing Cards” in the choreography and staging of Ilya Zhivoy replenished the collection of Igor Stravinsky’s ballets in the Mariinsky Theater repertoire;

Melanie Hamrik, Alexander Sergeev, Vladimir Shklyarov and Alexander Chelidze, Dmitry Pimonov, Ilya Zhivoy, Maxim Petrov, Yuri Smekalov presented their works as part of the Creative Workshop of Young Choreographers project;

After an eight-year hiatus, the solemn stage mystery of Richard Wagner’s “Parsifal” directed by Tony Palmer (1997 production in the modern edition of the Mariinsky Theater) returned to the historical stage of the Mariinsky Theater;

Peter Tchaikovsky’s opera The Enchantress returned to the stage directed by David Pountney (staged by the Mariinsky Theater in collaboration with Teatro Nacional de Sāo Carlos, 2003). The performance was resumed after a ten-year hiatus;
